Opens scoring Sunday
Surman scored one goal to go with one shot (one on goal) in Sunday's 3-1 defeat to Egypt.
Analysis: Surman opened up the scoring Sunday with a header in the 15th minute assisted by Tim Payne's cross. Surman found himself unmarked in the box, giving him an easy opportunity to score his third career international goal and his first at the World Cup. Despite the strong start and first half from the Kiwis, Surman and the defense struggled mightily in the second half. Egypt scored thrice in the second half to complete the comeback and then some, exposing the New Zealand defense that has now allowed five goals through two matches at this World Cup. Next up is the final group stage match versus Belgium on Friday, a must-win match for both sides.
One shot vs Iran in 2-2 draw
Surman recorded one shot (zero on goal) and one chance created in Monday's 2-2 draw against Iran.
Analysis: Surman made nine clearances, most by a New Zealand player in the match. The 22-year-old blocked three shots as well, also most by a New Zealand player. Surman also provided a key pass.
Starting against SKC
Surman (undisclosed) is in the initial lineup for Saturday's clash with Sporting Kansas City.
Analysis: Surman ended up avoiding a serious issue from the blow that forced him to leave the field last weekend against Real Salt Lake, so he'll continue to play his usual role in upcoming games. He'll now operate alongside Kamal Miller in central defense, leaving Alex Bonetig on the bench. The 22-year-old should remain valuable for his defensive output, currently leading the squad with an average of 7.1 clearances per game.
Replaced at halftime
Surman recorded two tackles (two won) and one clearance in Saturday's 2-0 defeat against Real Salt Lake. He was injured and subbed out in the 46th minute.
Analysis: Surman was seen receiving bandages as he was forced to be subbed start at the start of the second half. He's featured in the starting XI in all 10 MLS appearances for Portland, recording already 71 clearances, averaging about 7.1 per contest.
